Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) As the candidates of the criteria used by the Japanese for evaluating speaking rate of Japanese words, number of; 1. morae, and 2. syllables, each per unit time, were contrasted. Thirty-two pairs each consisted of a "standard word" and a "comparison word" (one of which included the special syllable types of either CVN, CVQ, or CV:) were prepared. Ten Japanese native listeners were instructed to select one speaking rate, among the five candidates of speaking-rate-modified comparison words, that he/she felt was the nearest to that of the standard word. As a result, the speaking rate corresponding to the same average-mora duration as the standard words was selected 183 times for the total of 320 (32pairs *10subjects), which was the highest frequency among the choices. Although the rate for the same average-syllable duration was selected only 6 times, the rate of the harmonic mean of these two rates was selected as many as 123 times. The result was in the same direction as the trends in the speech production studies.
