Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) We can use multiple modalities to accurately perceive the external world. It is known that the inputs are independently processed in each modality, and then, the estimated information in each modality are integrated. We investigated what information is estimated in each modality and are integrated into unified representation. We conducted the experiment in which the observers estimate the amount of deformation of an object through vision and haptics and the temporal incoherency between modalities was introduced. One alternative is the indirect integration model, which assumes that the amount of deformation is estimated in each modality and is integrated into the unified representation. The other alternative is the direct integration model, which assumes that the states of the object at given times are estimated in each modality and integrated into unified, and then, the amount of deformation is estimated by using unified representation. The results showed that the temporal incoherency makes the estimated amount of deformation smaller than the physical input, suggesting that the direct integration model was valid. We integrate the states of the external world which is estimated at given time in each modality.
