An Interpolation Method for Bayer Color Array

Abstract(in English) In this paper, we propose an interpolation method for Bayer color array of CCD cameras. A single CCD is used for sensing color components in the digital steel cameras. A color filter array is overlaid on the CCD and one of three components (i.e., Red, Green and Blue) is sensed at each pixel. Bayer color array is the most common one. Green component is sensed at half of all pixels, and Red and Blue components are each sensed at a fourth pixels of them in Bayer color array. Three components are needed for each pixel, thus, two components which are not sensed are interpolated by using the sensed pixel values. A lot of interpolation methods for Bayer color array use the correlation of the three components of the natural color image. The adaptive color plane interpolation (ACPI), which belongs to those methods, is known as the excellent method. However, ACPI shows bad results for color images whose three components have negative correlation and considerable different dynamic range one another. In order to overcome the defects, we propose a novel interpolation method, which consists two processes. First process is the interpolation of Green components by using ACPI. Second process is the interpolation of Red and Blue components based on the interpolated Green component. Their interpolation method is to imitate the shape of the interpolated Green component to Red and Blue components. Thus, the color edge is interpolated sharply. However, the impulsive noise is produced at the smooth region of interpolated images of Red and Blue components. So, the information of Green component is limited for interpolation of Red and Green components Simulation results show the superior performance of the proposed method compared to ACPI, cubic interpolation and so on.
