Predictive Image Coding based on Essential Curved Surface Units for Natural Image

Abstract(in English) This paper propose a method of predictive image coding based on Vector Quantization (VQ). In general VQ, after an input image is divided into sub-blocks in 2-demensional spatial domain, each sub-blocks which is called input vector is processed independently. However, it is considered that each input vector has high correlation with neighbor vectors. Thus, it is possible to achieve more efficiency coding to predict a vector using neighbor vectors. It is difficult to predict vector compared with the case of pixel, because input vectors include more information, which are direction, magnitude, and average. In order to solve the problem, we have proposed a new imaged coding method using Essential Curved Surface Units which are artificial vectors to approximate the small region in any natural images. In our method, it is possible to predict an input vector because all ECSU are defined by the pattern with simple shape. It is seen in our experimental results that the bit rate is reduced about 1.5[bit/pel]at the same PSNR.
