Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Previous approaches to on-line handwritten character recognition are generally based on the assumption that characters are written in appointed areas, requiring users' careful looking. This approach is not suitable for mobile and wearable computing that requires "quick", "one hand" and "simultaneous" manipulation. This paper proposes a new approach to handwritten character recognition. In this approach, users can write the characters in the air using devices, like a pen, without the need to look at them. In this case, we can fix neither scale nor positions of characters. We can only use the motion vectors of the pen movements. We prototyped a system that detects motion vectors from images of a built-in video camera and achieved correct recognition rate of about 90% for categories of Hiragana characters and numeral characters.
