MEASUREMENT OF SPORT MOTION BY MARKING ON A SEGMENT WITH CIRCULAR-RING MARKER(International Workshop on Advanced Image Technology 2006)

抄録(英) This paper proposes a suitable technique for capturing sports motions. Optical motion capture systems have an advantage of less interference to moving targets, and therefore, it is often used for digitizing human actions. However, how to arrange and attach the markers on the body surface are a key issue. We pointed out two problems of conventional marker alignment. One is that the joint surface where a marker attached on is quite flexible and it might cause a large gap between the marker and the joint position during motion. The other is that measuring each joint as a point position does not provide precise axial rotation. The rotation around major axis is important for all sports forms including throwing, kicking and so forth. In this paper we propose a new method for measuring each joint point as a cross point of major axes of adjacent segments and the rotation around major axis, using optical circular-ring markers. Circular-ring marker has painted stripes along the body segment and can be used by wrapping it around a segment. The orientation of major axis and the rotation around it can be measured by extracting the stripes. The proposed approach is free from interference to the body motion and expected to be effective for sports motion capturing.
