Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) This paper proposes a new algorithm for head gesture detection using the correlation between the velocity vector peaks of coordinate values about a head motion. The conventional methods using hidden Markov models detects a down-motion or up-motion independently. However, our algorithm does not detect it independently. The algorithm detects a head nod by observing the angle (or inner product) between the motion vector of a down-motion and that of a following up-motion. Therefore, a slant nod motion can be properly detected. We built a head nod and shake detection system using an automatic face and facial feature detector, and confirmed the effectiveness of the algorithm. This system can process 20 frames per second on a Pentium 4 3GHz PC.
