Abstract(in English) | We have proposed a region growing method SRG (Successive Region Growing) as a part of constructing a screening system for lung cancer detection. In the system, a pair of multi-temporal 3D helical CT data are co-registered and subtracted for detecting the shape changes. Medical knowledge tells us that tumors often adhere to pulmonary vein. So the separation of pulmonary vessels into artery and vein is very important to improve the accuracy in detecting in detecting the tumors. It is known that pulmonary arteries run parallel to bronchus and veins run to boundary of lung area. Thus, we can separately recognize the artery and the vein by analyzing the relative position of bronchus and vessels. In this paper, we propose a method for separating the pulmonary artery from the vein. We recognize the first branching point, then searching the second ones. Vessel branches defined as the part of vessels between the first branching point to the second ones are compared with the bronchus branches extracted by the same manner. When the distance between the vessel branch and the bronchus branch is small and/or direction of both branches are almost the same, the vessel branch is determined as the artery. Once determining weather artery or vein, we recognize all the pulmonary vessels by using the continuity of the vessels. Here, we describe the principle and the procedure of this method. The application results of this to actual 3D CT images are also shown. |
