Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) An outstanding technique for efficient coupling between pillar-type photonic crystal circuits and Si-wire waveguides is proposed. In order to improve the coupling efficiency, Si-wire waveguide tapers with nanometer-sized tips are introduced and theoretically optimized, resulting in coupling efficiencies higher than 90% for 200-nm bandwidth around an operational wavelength of 1550nm. The tapered Si-waveguide couplers are placed at the input and output ports of a wavelength multiplexer-demultiplexer based on pillar-type photonic crystal circuits for coarse wavelength division multiplexing systems. It is confirmed though numerical simulations that the demultiplexing characteristics are drastically improved, in comparison to the conventional butt coupling technique.
