Abstract(in English) | Novel guided-wave electro-optic (EO) modulators using resonant electrodes and polarization-reversed structures are reported. EO modulators using standing-wave resonant electrodes are attractive for many applications in quasi-millimeter-wave and millimeter-wave frequency ranges. However, long standing-wave resonant electrodes for a higher order resonance mode may cause the degradation of the modulation efficiency by the transit-time effect. In order to overcome the problem from the transit-time effect, we propose the EO modulators using resonant electrodes and polarization-reversed structures of ferroelectric optical materials. It enables us to construct high-efficiency high-speed optical modulators. In addition, it is also possible to control the phase of EO modulation by changing the pattern of the polarization reversal. Utilizing this interesting feature, optical SSB modulators operated with a single RF modulation signal are obtained. |
