Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) During reading the first fixation is affected by the behavior of the preceding fixation. The first fixation is referred to as Fixation C, while the preceding fixation as Fixation B. There are two phenomena reported on the relation between Fixation B and C. The one is that the closer Fixation B location is to Fixation C location, the shorter Fixation C duration. This phenomenon has been called parafoveal preview benefit effect. The other is that the shorter Fixation B duration, the shorter Fixation C duration. The aim of this study is to simulate eye movements in reading English, where these two phenomena appear. On the other hand Troxler effect has been reported for years. When a circle is viewed colored gray at the center and fading away to white in the periphery, the fixation of a few seconds at the center causes the gradations to disappear from perception. This phenomenon has been called Troxler effect. From the fact that each fixation includes short-distance eye movements, it can be implied that short-distance eye movements causes low sampling rate at foveated vision, which leads to Troxler effect. So, in this study first Troxler effect is simulated by decreasing the sampling rate when an eye moves short. Then it is shown that the two relations between Fixation B and C appear in the cast the sampling rate at fovea is decreased to less than 20% when an eye moves 6-letter width or shorter.
