Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) When talking to another person face to face we can well estimate what the other person hears. Unfortunately, this ability is lost when the communication is made at the site in which it is difficult to estimate what the other person hears, i.e. to a remote partner using a video-audio tele-communication system. This loss degrades the quality of communication possible. Our proposal, in a broad sense, visualizes information that people cannot perceive objectively. The proposed system facilitates communication by allowing people to share visual information. The key idea is to project a visual representation of the sound field at the partner's site, on the other's site. We describe a prototype system and experiments in which we observe users' responses to this visual representation. We observe that subjects understood how to utilize the visual representation without any explicit explanation; they instinctively used the representation to control the volume of their voice. The comments from the subjects confirmed that the visual representation allowed the subjects to feel confident about correctly controlling the volume of their voice.
