Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) In the all-optical wavelength converter based on semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) where cross phase modulation (XPM) is utilized, it is difficult to achieve good conversion characteristics by the so-called "standard operation mode" in which the data signal is injected into only one of the two SOAs due to the intensity unbalance induced by cross gain modulation (XGM). Especially in the case of non-return-to-zero (NRZ) format signal, SOA gain is deeply suppressed when successive mark levels are injected and hence the pattern effect is a significant issue. In this report, bidirectional injection operation scheme of the SOA-MZI all-optical wavelength converter is proposed and experimentally verified so as to diminish such pattern effect by utilizing the dependence of the ratio between XGM and XPM on the injection direction of the data signal.
