Analysis of Photo Response of Organelles in Leaves of Succulent Plants by Using Confocal Laser Scanning Microscopy

Abstract(in English) Plants have various responses for change of light conditions. In leaves of some succulent plants, it has been found that clumping of chloroplasts is induced by a combination of light and water stress. Many succulent species are distributed in arid regions, so that the phenomenon has been considered as a morphological mechanism that protects against light stress intensified by a severe water deficit. Clarifying the adaptive mechanism to dry environments in succulent plants would be important for improvement of drought-tolerant plants. In this study, we investigated the effect of wavelength of light on the chloroplast clumping movement by using confocal laser scanning microscopy, which known to be useful for in vivo analysis in bio and medical science. We suggested that blue and UV light were related with the clumping chloroplast.
