Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) We investigated cultural influences on the recognition of facial expression. [Subjects] Thirty Japanese and 27 Balinese. [Methods] We composed Japanese average-faces and Balinese ones from portraits of them. And we composed 6 images which express each 6 basic emotions (happiness, surprise, fear, sadness, disgust, angry). Twenty-four stimuli of face images were presented on CRT. Subjects answered which emotion were expressed in each images. [Results] The Japanese and Balinese did agree that happiness was the easiest to identify, while fear was the most difficult. Balinese did agree easier than Japanese in fear and disgust.
