Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) It is a funfamental question wheter facial expressions are perceived categorically or processed on the continuous dimensions. We investigated this issue using three sets of morphed photographic facial images (happiness to anger, surprise, or sadness), generated by computers. Our interest was in whether the experimental data of categorical perception could be explained by continuous dimensions. In first experiment, Subjects discriminated pairs of faces and categorized the emotion shown by each.. In second experiment, subjects rated the expressions stimuli using a semantic differential. We examined the relationship between discrimination accuracy and semantic distance, defined as the Euclidean distance between pairs of stimuli in the factor space. The effect of the category was well explained by using semantic distance.
