Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) This study examined the effect of facial makeup on the impression of the face. Face outline and facial expression were also manipulated to see whether such effects, if any, might be different depending on the shape and/or the expression of the face. In order to control extraneous variables such as subtle difference in a face model's making a particular facial expression across several makeup conditions, we applied computer graphics techniques to create fully controlled facial stimuli. Rating results showed, for example, that faces with red eye shadow and pink lipstick appeared more flamboyant and less approachable than those with blue eye shadow and pink lipstick, indicating that the eye shadow alone made difference in the impression formed. This result gave support to the viability of the CG techniques used to create the present facial stimuli as otherwise such tiny portion of a face would not have caused consistent change in the impression of the face.
