Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) This paper presents the concept of the voluntary network as a new paradigm for constructing and operating future networks supporting next-generation computing. Three network models are identified for the realization of the voluntary network, that is, the bandwidth-based model, the terminal-based model, and the access point-based model. Wireless Multihop LAN (WMLAN) is described as an example of the third model. It is just the wireless LAN for mobile stations. Its backbone is the wireless multihop network, where the mobile ad hoc network (MANET) technologies are used to support communication between access points. Two architectures for WMLAN are presented, LAN emulation and IP-in-IP encapsulation. Several important technical points and issues are identified and discussed.
