Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Recently, thulium doped fiber amplifiers (TDFAs) have been attracting great attention as a solution of S-band optical amplification. Unlike EDFAs, TDFAs exhibit a complicated gain spectra variation, as Tm ions exist in three levels, ^3H_4,^3F_4, and ^3H_6. In this paper, we report the TDFA behavior on the occasion of the change in the span loss, the wavelength number, and the environmental temperature, that is expected in the field photonic networks. In order to maintain the per-channel signal level, several countermeasures have been examined, namely, the control of the auxiliary pump power at the wavelength of 1.56um, the variable optical attenuator (VOA) and the variable attenuation slope compensators (VASCs). It has been demonstrated that the VASC is useful to suppress the gain variation resulting from the change both in the signal level and the channel number. As a result, the output signal level has been maintained within the error of 0.2dB over 28nm-bandwidth, within the dynamic range of -27±4dBm/ch and the channel number from 4 to 32. The temperature-induced gain variation in TDFAs can also be regarded as linear tilt, and easily compensated by the VASC.
