Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) In video conference systems over the Internet, audio and video data are transmitted using UDP. Therefore, QoS degradation due to packet losses is a serious problem. In this paper we describe a dependable video conference system, based on the application of the two following techniques: (1) packet loss recovery using convolutional codes, which improves the dependability of communication; and (2) Xcast, a multicast that is designed for relatively small groups, which reduces the bandwidth required for a multi-point conference. We added these functions to the GK(Gatekeeper), a device used in conventional conference systems. Encoding/decoding and Xcast routing are then implemented as the upper layer of UDP. We investigated the effectiveness of the proposed system in experiments using an Internet simulator. We also tested the implementation and functioning of the system over the Internet in a multi-point conference between the networks of our university (metro-u.ac.jp) and our laboratory (toritsudai.jp).
