Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) As a new framework for providing QoS services, DiffServ is being standardized at the IETF. Like IntServ, DiffServ also can provide guaranteed QoS if the network is adequately provisioned. However, if the provisioning for buffer capacity of a node is based on deterministic worst-case evaluation used for IntServ, the required buffer capacity would increase exponentially beyond a feasible level as number of transit nodes increases, since there exists the possibility that the output burstiness could become greater than the input burstiness. On the other hand, the output burstiness calculated by the deterministic evaluation is not observed in simulations. In this paper, motivated by the above background, we evaluate probabilistically the burst length of the output traffic through a FIFO queue with policed inputs. Our results show that the distribution of the output burst length for a certain input traffic can be evaluated by using the queue length distribution of a virtual queuing system with some other input traffic.
