Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Gaze and facial expressions of emotion provide various types of information in social interaction. The present study investigated how the emotional valence of verbally-described emotional episodes would influence the gaze direction and facial expressions of speakers. The thirty-nine undergraduate students told the three emotional episodes (angry, joy, and sad) and the non-emotional control episode toward the listener whose face could be seen on the monitor of a prompter. The speakers' facial displays were videotaped at the same time. The amount of gaze directed toward the listener increased during the joy episode. As for anger or sadness episode, the gaze toward the listener didn't differ from the control condition. The positive facial expression (AU6; the cheek raiser movements) were equally frequently observed in all the emotional episodes, although the negative expression (AU1; inner brow raiser, AU4; brow lower movement) were very few. The positive expressions were likely to be accompanied with directed gaze, while the negative expressions were likely to be accompanied with averted gaze or closed eyes.
