View-based method of personal positioning and orientation for wearable computer systems : Reduction of image database for a wide area application

Abstract(in English) In this paper, we describe an improved method of personal positioning and orientation using image registration between input video frames and panoramic images captured beforehand. In our previous method, panoramic images are required to be captured at a dense interval. Therefore we have difficulties for a wider area application since a serious amount of work is required to capture and maintain the image database. We improved the previous method by using a pedometer to detect and measure user's relative displacement from a known location. The improved method requires much sparse density of panoramic images to correct cumulative errors of the pedometer by the view-based registration between the input frames and the panoramic images. We implemented and evaluated the method on the VizWear prototype system. As a result, the number of panoramic images required can be reduced to 1/10 and the computational cost required for view-based image registration can be reduced to between 1/10 and 1/20.
