Automatic Generation of Simplified Map for Virtual Environments and its Effect

Abstract(in English) The electronic map is very useful for navigation in the VRML/X3D worlds. So far various map-based interfaces have been developed. But they lacked generality because of having been developed for individual 3D worlds. To reduce the unnecessary development cost and to realize general-purpose interfaces, we are doing researches on methods that automatically generate a map-based interface for any VRML/X3D worlds. There is a possibility that scale-down maps of large-scale virtual environments are too complicated to use and its calculation loads get larger. To solve these problems this paper proposes a method for automatic map simplification and shows its effectiveness by experiment.
