Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Recently, high-speed and long-haul optical communication systems with a bit-rate of 40Gb/s are now being developed. Polarization mode dispersion (PMD) is regarded as imposing a limitation on such systems. To overcome this, it is necessary to apply PMD compensation techniques. Dynamic PMD compensators are commonly composed of the feedback controlled polarization devices by monitoring the state of polarization (SOP). One of the major problems with dynamic PMD compensators is to design their tracking speed, which relates to the SOP changes that occur in the field. In this paper, we perform optical fiber handling at a cable joint to clarify the SOP changes as one of major maintenance activities during optical communication services. We report the experimental results and discuss major cause of fast SOP changes.
