Development of advanced separable optical fiber ribbons

Abstract(in English) As the growth of optical fiber networks, the construction work to make branch lines to home from aerial cable is increasing. However, at the branching point on the aerial cable, a low efficiency of utilized fiber has become a problem. Then, we have developed the advanced separable optical fiber ribbons (2, 4, 8-count-fiber) in the mid-span of a cable. We have also developed a method that can easily separate the advanced separable optical fiber ribbons into the designated fiber count without any damages on the optical fiber ribbons in the mid-span of a cable, using a simple tool. Moreover, we have evaluated transmission loss, temperature characteristics, mechanical properties and long-term reliability of the separable ribbons, and we confirmed that the advanced separable ribbons are suitable for practical use.
