Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) The present study was designed to examine whether self-oriented co-speech gestures promote speech comprehension of the listener. Based on the pilot observation (n=11), we made four types of narrating videos (stimulus) which differed in gesture expressions : 'no-gesture', 'normal', 'untypical', and 'mismatch'. In the experiment, the participants (n=64) watched the stimulus video, and then their comprehension was tested by oral recall and the questionnaire. Results showed that the self-oriented gestures, if properly accompany speech, increased the listeners' understanding of the speech. Results of the questionnaire suggested that most of the listeners didn't pay attention to the gestures, although their speech comprehension was influenced by the gestures.
