Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) We have developed an always-on communications system for long-term-hospitalized children and for elderly people living on their own. Through its three-dimensional cyberspace and video-conference facilities, this system provides an integrated communications environment for children and elderly people. This paper is a report on this always-on communications system and on experiments carried out to evaluate communications space it provides. In concrete terms, we compared "face-w-face" communication by long-term-hospitalized children via avatars with the following two kinds of appearance: (1) a composite of a human figure and video images of the user; and (2) an imaginary character. The result of the experiment suggested certain effects of the avatar's appearance on communications mediated by the system.
