Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Photonic crystal fibers (PCFs) can be divided into two different classes: holey fibers (HFs) and photonic band-gap fibers (PBGFs). Especially, HFs pocess various fascinating properties such as wide single-mode wavelength range, bend-loss edge at short wavelength, extremely large/small effective core-areas, anomalous group-velocity dispersion at visible and near-infrared wavelengths, and strong wavelength-dependent beam divergence. In this paper the possibilities of applying HFs with unique properties such as large birefringence and unusual dispersion to optical communications are discussed.
