Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Two experiments were carried out to examine whether smiling faces with deformity showed same cognitive functions as the ones of normal faces did or not. First experiment was discrimination between smiling faces and neutral ones. The stimuli were the normal faces and the faces of patients with cleft lip and palate (CLP faces). Participants were 15 female undergraduates. The results showed there was no difference of responses between the normal faces and CLP faces. A task of second experiment was a rating of facial impression for CLP faces. The stimuli were movie clips of involuntary smiling faces and neutral faces. Participants were 12 female undergraduates. The results showed the facial impression for involuntary smiling faces was significantly improved in comparison with the one for neutral faces. Although the faces with cleft lip and palate show the deformity of upper lip and nose, we can conclude the smiling faces with cleft lips and palate has same cognitive functions as normal faces.
