Abstract(in English) | With the increase in the number of senior citizens, there is a growing demand forhuman-friednly wheelchairs as mobility aids. This paper proposes a concept of a robotic wheelchair to meet this need. The Wheelchair can understand the user's intention correctly by observing his/her behavior and its circumstances. So the user can control the wheelchair by minimum operations. The wheelchair has three autonomous navigation capabilities, avoiding obstacle and assisting moving straight to a certain place, following the wall by using ultrasonic and vision sensors. These capabilities can reduce the user's burden. When the user is off the wheelchair, it detects him/her by recognizing his/her face. Then user can control the wheelchair by hand gestures at a distance. We have developed an experimantal robotic wheelchair based on the above concept. The effectiveness of our approach is shown with the results of experiments. |
