Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) NTT has been conducting a joint research project with Communications Research Laboratory and National Astronomical Observatory since June 1995. The purpose is to establish technologies for very high-speed communications and to explore the effectiveness of those networking technologies for advanced scientific research. For the time being, ultra-high sensitivity radio telescope and realtime crustal movement measurement, both utilizing VLBI (Very Long Baseline Interferometer) and Gigabit-class networking technology, are being tested. This paper reports the current status of the project together with the future research plan aiming for higher sensitivities and more versatile observations by adopting advanced networking functions.
