Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) What makes a face attractive and where do our preferences come from? We propose that some standards of beauty are set by our evolutionary, rather than our cultural, history. Here, we consider whether the attractiveness of average facial configurations is biologically-based. A hallmark of biologically based preferences is that they occur in a variety of cultures. We present data showing that a preference for average facial configurations, which is well established in Western cultures, occurs in both Chinese and Japanese cultures.
