A Meaning-Driven Machine Translation System Based on Interpreter Techniques

Abstract(in English) We analyze the performance of human translators and find that they proceed by understanding and converting large blocks of material at roughly the paragraph level. Existing machine translation (MT) systems work at the phrase or sentence level and so their quality is limited. Our analysis identifies two new processes: anticipation translation and explicit translation. We create a new architecture that is intended to realize the next generation of MT systems that will allow all users to communicate across the language barrier. The architecture consists of two modules: discourse driven translation and meaning-driven translation. The latter replicates the two new processes.
