Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Speakers tend to use different expressions which have the same meanings but with different level of politeness when they speak to different listeners. Brown and Levinson proposed a theory to explain such speech strategy. However, their theory is only qualitative. We propose a statistical model for predicting expressions used in various relationships, such as familiarity and social power differences, between speaker and listener. The politeness of each expression is quantified by paired comparison method. The mutilple regression analysis is applied to constuct the model.
