Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) The purpose of this study was to clarify the developmental processes of vocal affect expression in children. Utterances of the word/pikachu/, the name of character in the popular animated cartoon were recorded from 46 children aged 3-10 when they were asked to express each of five basic emotions (happy, sadness, anger, surprise and neutral) in their utterances. The emotion identification scores were measured for the utterances based on auditory identification tests carried out by 10 normal adult listeners. No significant age effect on the identification scores was found, whereas the main effect of emotion and the interaction effect between emotion and age were found signficant. Results suggested that emotions whose explicit expressions have social benefits are more accurately identified in utterances of school age children than those of preschoolers.
