Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) In high-speed optical transmission systems beyond 10 Gbit/s, signal distortion caused by polarization-mode dispersion (PMD) is a major limitation on transmission distance. We demonstrated automatic PMD compensation in 40-Gbit/s NRZ transmission for the first time. We adopted a PMD monitor using 20-GHz intensity of received baseband signals and a feedback control of a PMD compensator composed of a polarization controller and a PME. As a result, we more than doubled the allowable PMD (more than quadrupled the transmission distance). In addition, we achieved a 40-Gb/s automatic PMD compensation using a high-PMD fiber (σ_=9.7 ps) with random polarization mode coupling.
