Statistical Analysis of Polarization Mode Dispersion

Abstract(in English) Recently, there are many active discussions reported on Polarization Mode Dispersion (PMD) related to PMD equalization for 40 Gb/s transmission systems, even including redefinition of higher order-PMD. Since PMD is a measure of polarization dependent group delay dispersion of optical transmission line, the Taylor expansion of transfer function matrix gives mathematically clear description of PMD generalized to include higher-order PMD definition. Statistical distribution of the first-order PMD is not the chi-square distribution due to the cross-term included in PMD definition. Mathematical derivation of PMD operators and deviation form chi-square distribution are reported.
