Performance Evaluation of Optical Coupler Using Optical Diffusing Sheet Technology

Abstract(in English) We propose a new optical coupler which consist of an optical diffusing sheet and plastic optical fibers (POF) for low-cost optical interconnection. The optical diffusing sheet is sheet-like light guiding media that has light diffusing films at the incident end. Optimizing the diffusion angle and the geometry of the optical diffusing sheet, uniform distribution to the POFs is achieved. We confirm the principle of this new method by both simulations and experiments. A 1 × 4 optical coupler with insertion loss less than 3dB and uniformity better than 3% is obtained.
