Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) We demonstrate stable single- and multi-wavelength lasing in miniature (1-5mm long) Er^<3+>:Yb^<3+>-codoped fiber Fabry-Perot lasers (FFPL's). At room temperature, the FFPL operates at unstable multi-wavelength. By cooling the FFPL by liquid nitrogen (77K), it becomes stable multi-wavelength operation with the wavelength separation by 20-100GHz. A problem is that each wavelength is composed of two polarization modes. On the contrary, we found that single-wavelength and single-polarization operation is possible in the FFPL with self-injection locking by a fiber Bragg grating (FBG). A 5mm-long self-injection locked FFPL is truly in a single frequency and in a single polarization, has high output, narrow linewidth, and low relative intensity noise (RIN). A 10Gb/s NRZ transmission test demonstrates that it is good for a signal source for optical fiber communications.
