Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) In recent years, demands are increasing for application of the ground penetrating radar (GPR) technique to deep targets beyond the depth which has been thought its applicable limit. In order to meet the demands, development of low frequency radar systems has been accelerated. This paper presents the results of five case studies using a pulse radar system with antennas for various frequencies equal to and lower than 400 MHz. The studies include detection of buried pipes, characterization of fractures of outcropping rock masses, examination of a solid waste disposal site, inspection of a 'sabo' dam body and estimation of thicknesses of colluvial deposits on steep slopes. The results indicate that the low frequency radar system can be applied to targets deeper than 10m unless ground is particularly conductive, though its resolution is slightly lower than that of popular systems adopting frequencies of several hundreds megahertz. It will be possible to expand new applications of the ground penetrating radar technique using low frequency radar systems to various new fields if low frequency radar systems are appropriately applied.
