Abstract(in English) | A disorder that sex differs from gender is called gender identity disorders. For diagnosis of the disorder and in order to evaluate validity of applying sex reassignment surgery to the patient, an interview with the patient by plural psychiatrists has been actually adopted as a basic methodology. To guarantee credibility of the diagnosis and the evaluation, it is necessary to develop a methodology that could identify the gender by objective and quantitative techniques. Although it was said that corpus callosum which connects between right and left cerebral hemisphere has sex difference in shape and may be utilized to the gender estimation, it has not been clear that corpus callosum has significant sex differences yet. In this study, it is revealed that principal orientation of corpus callosum on MRI of midsagittal plane is significantly proclinate in females compared to in males, by investigating sex differences in Fourier descriptors and central moments of corpus callosum. We then proposed sex identification method using the principal orientation of corpus callosum as a figure characteristic. While discrimination rate was about 60% when no information about the principal orientation is used for the sex estimation, it was shown that the sex could be identified in the discrimination rate of about 70% by the proposed method. The result suggests that there may exist sex differences in callosal configurations in cranium including the callosal inclination as well as callosal figure. |
