Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Smart antennas have not been popularly employed so far in spite of their high gain and adaptive beamforming functionality. This is due to the complexity in their hardware configurations; they need to have the same number of RF signal processing circuits as antenna elements in them. The complexity makes their weight, power consumption, and fabrication cost too high for them to be implemented in popular electronic commercial products such as battery-operated wireless terminals for personal digital assistance. This speech introduces that there are five alternative beamforming schemes possibly adoptable for smart antennas. They are characterized by the unique weighting topologies and compared from the viewpoint of hardware wide acceptance to low-cost portable terminals in commercial wireless systems.
