An Explicit Acknowledgement Mechanism for TCP/IP over ATM UBR+EPD Service

Abstract(in English) This paper presents a new congestion control mechanism, called An Explicit Acknowledgement Mechanism (EACK), for TCP/IP over ATM UBR+EPD service. Current approaches to this problem can be classified into two policies, end system policies and ATM switch drop policies. Early Packet Discard (EPD) is one of ATM switch drop policies with which high effective throughput can be achieved. The combination of EACK with EPD seems to provide effective throughput for the average TCP connection. We present detailed analysis that show how EACK can have a good TCP performance when compared to other end system policies such as Reno TCP and SACK TCP.
