Abstract(in English) Recently demands on transmitting compressed still images or video images over wireless channels have been increasing rapidly due to the popularity of the internet and the expansion of mobile computing environments. However, the most of image compression algorithms are not specilized to wireless channels. One of the problems is the use of variable length codes(VLCs). The decoder for the VLCs may lose synchronization of codewords and produce burst errors owing to an error in the recieved signal. It has been suggested that replacement of the VLC with a fixed length code may solve this problem. However, this technique does not fix the number of DCT coefficients to be transmitted. Thus there is a probability with which burst errors may occur. In this paper, fixation of the number of DCT coefficients is considered. It is shown that, especially under the low SNR condition, the proposed technique improves the quality of the reconstructed images.
