Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) When a fiber directional coupler, which is one of the fiber optic devices used in optical communications and sensing applications, is excited with an intense laser light, nonlinear optical effect is induced in the fiber and the coupler exhibits the abrupt wavelength selective coupling and switching characteristics. Then, it follows that ultra-short optical pulses propagating into the coupler are distorted by the nonlinear optical effects and group velocity dispersion. Recently, it has been reported that the coupling coefficient that is an important parameter to characterize a directional coupler, affects significantly the nonlinear directional fiber coupler. In this paper, we analyzed numerically the propagation of ultra-short optical pulses by taking into account the above effect in linear and nonlinear regimes. We also confirmed experimentally nonlinear coupling of a fiber directional coupler using a mode-locked Ti:sapphire laser and compared the experimental results with the numerical calculations.
