Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) This paper proposes a method that estimates the optimum focal lengrh for character recognition eves in dim light conditions. insufficient illumination makes it difficult to determine the correct focal length and decreases the recognition rate. To overcome this problem, we determine the optimum focal length for the assumed character size from several recognition experiments for different levels of illumination. Recognition accuracy is further improved by adopting zoom control. Tests involving multiple fonts show that our method increases the recognition rates over a wide range of camera-object distances and illumination levels.
