Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Several Internet-based QoS frameworks, such as Integrated Services (IntServ) and Differentiated Services (DiffServ), have been proposed. They are, however, not widely used because of the cost to modify and configure all existing routers. To differentiate transmission quality of user sessions without any modifications or configurations of the routers and terminals, we have proposed a priority control scheme that relays low-priority sessions by using low priority TCP (TCP Westwood Low-Priority) on a TCP transparent proxy. We evaluated this priority control scheme in an experimental network. The experimental results show the same as the simulation results, which TCP Westwood Low-Priority sessions by this scheme can fully utilize residual network capacity without degrading the transmission quality of the other traffic. Using this scheme to change the background traffic to low-priority traffic, the transmission time of FTP sessions is decreased by at least 50% from no using this scheme, and the transmission time for Web downloads is decreased by at least 80%. In addition, for VoIP sessions, the delay jitter with this scheme is reduced to about a quarter of that without this scheme.
