A Prefetching Strategy of Streaming Contents Using Multiple Connections with Origin Servers

Abstract(in English) Most existing streaming proxy servers perform prefetching which absorbs fluctuations of the throughput available at the bottleneck between origin servers and the proxy servers. Prefetching, however, causes contentions of available bandwidth at the bottleneck between prefetching traffic and other competing traffic, such as WWW or download type traffic. Thus, in order to keep preferable service level of other competing traffic, the number of streamings accommodated in the bottleneck cannot be increased sufficiently. In this paper, we propose a novel prefetching strategy which adapts prefetching rate according to the degree of congestion at the bottleneck. Our method utilizes multiple streaming connections with an origin server to prefetch a particular streaming content, and it controls the prefetching rate with changing the number of the connections. In the evaluation, we have confirmed that our method enables 1.4-2.4 times larger number of streamings to be accommodated in the bottleneck compared with the existing method while keeping the good service level of each competing traffic.
