Properties of Edge-Enhancement and Scale-Space of Bilateral Filters

Abstract(in English) The bilateral filter presented by Tomasi and Manduchi attracts much attension in various fields and has been applied to image processing for computer vision and computer graphics. In this report, we examine several ways of interpretation of the bilateral filter by deriving it from some statistical estimation formulas. We then analyze its edge-enhancement performance and the properties of a scale-space given by the iterated bilateral filters. We also apply it to imge segmentation and devise simple speed-up methods for the bilateral filtering.
